London opened its first “senior’s playground” on Wednesday, May 19th, in Hyde Park. According to The Washington Post, this playground opening was spurred by residents campaigning for more facilities that help older people get and stay in shape.
The lines were already long early in the morning with people eager to try out six low-impact exercise machines including a sit-up bench, a stationary bicycle, and a cross-trainer. You won’t find see-saws and jungle gyms at this playground. Instead, it’s home to a variety of exercise equipment that is low-impact, great for joint and muscle issues. All of the machines stimulate walking, twisting and cycling, which are perfect activities for the elderly.
There are also three benches placed around the playground for those who are taking a break from their fitness regimen.
Mark Camley, the chief executive of the group managing the park, stated, “It was great seeing a large group of older people there, trying to outdo each other, even. As we get an increasingly older population, it’s important to find ways to keep them active.”
While the playground is aimed at those over 60, it is open to any and all and is particularly helpful for those who are recovering from injuries or operations. And it’s free! The playground is the first of its kind in the area; however, it was modeled off of similar “playgrounds” in other European countries.
Another great attribute about the Hyde Park Senior Playground is that it provides the elderly with a place to exercise where they won’t be belittled or intimidating. It’s also a great way to socialize and meet others who have similar interests. Exercisers can easily use the playground as a way to challenge each other while creating a unique group fitness atmosphere that can’t, arguably, be found at a typical gym.
