When the term “martial art” is mentioned, chances are that the first thing that springs to mind is an image from an action movie. While many of the fighting arts can be flashy, there are just as many that are subtle. Some arts focus on self-defense, while others promote inner well-being. In any case, practicing a martial art can help complement a fitness regimen, or even be the catalyst for the beginning of one.
However, there is a bewildering array of systems from which to choose. Deciding which one is right for you can seem an uphill battle, but it can be done. The key, as it so often does, lies with your self-understanding.
The very first question you’ll need to ask yourself is “What do I want to get out of the martial arts?” Ponder this question thoroughly and honestly, for getting it wrong can cost you time and money. You may want to learn self-defense, or maybe you just want to look cool. There really is no wrong answer; remember, this is for your benefit. It may surprise you to know that no matter what you end up choosing, there is an associated health benefit to be had.
This leads to the next consideration: what’s your body type? Are you tall and willowy, or short and stocky? While it’s true that most martial art systems can work with any body type, there are specific ones that take the best advantage of certain heights and weights. As a general guideline, greater height imparts better reach, while lesser height promotes a stronger base. Heavier students do well with grappling arts, while lighter students are drawn toward more acrobatic arts.
Finally, what truly interests you? Personally, I have tried many different systems and styles, both formal and informal, and time and again return to kung fu. There is something about it that feels “right” to me, and I’m happiest when practicing its forms and techniques. I’m not here to tout its superiority over any other style; in fact, I’d love to learn many different things at the same time — which has gotten easier than ever to do in our modern era, with its focus on MMA. Knowing your own mind and heart in this matter is supremely important. In upcoming posts, we’ll analyze the major martial arts systems to determine what each of them has to offer, and this should help you decide for yourself which one to pursue.
